Emu Callers

Emu Callers were traditionally used by the Bundjalung, Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri nations of New South Wales.

The Emu Caller emits an emu like sound by hitting it on one end with the flat of a hand. The sound produced attracts emus, making it a useful tool for hunting. It was also used as a musical instrument during ceremonies with its sound emulating an emu’s call.

Made from a short piece of hollow wood, usually around 30 cm to 50 cm long, the Emu Caller can be plain or decorated with carving, painted designs or feathers.
